The instruction was held on Saturday the 21st and Sunday the 22nd of March, on the motor vessel Reflection.

The main points covered are listed below:

Vessel Preparations

  • • Coast Guard Compliant
  • • Machinery, checked
  • • The location for all though-hulls to be known
  • • The inspection of the bilge for water and or oil
  • • Operation of all bilge pumps
  • • Operation of marine gears
  • • General visual condition of the boat
  • • Check weather: wind, tide, and current before leaving the dock
  • • Check for sufficient lines and fenders
  • • Discuss safety procedures with crew

Vessel Operation

  • • Understanding the operation of all the equipment in the wheelhouse
  • • Procedure for safely leaving the dock
  • • Became familiar with the operating of a twin screw vessel with bow thrusters
  • • Practice coming along side a pile dock using different wind scenarios
  • • Practice tight quarter maneuvering at Fishermen’s Terminal
  • • Ran through safe fueling practices and then took on fuel
  • • Ran through tie up procedure using bow stern and spring lines
  • • Discussed safe anchoring procedures

In Conclusion

I found John Smith to a quick study. It was soon obvious that he had already spent a significant amount of time on the water. Although he did not have much experiences with Twin Screw vessels, he quickly picked up on the operation of both screws and the bow thruster. Upon leaving the boat, I felt that it was in good hands. I believe John Smith to be a man that knows his abilities and limitations. With this said I believe John be capable of safely handling M/V Reflection and time will only improve his skills.
